KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia ended the morning session in the red, tracking mixed performances in regional markets and on Wall Street amid cautious trading.
At 12.30 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was down 0.15 of-a-point at 1,618.15, from Friday’s close of 1,618.30.
The benchmark index opened 4.04 points higher at 1,622.34 and fluctuated between 1,617.18 and 1,630.39 during the session.
Market breadth was negative, with decliners outnumbering advancers 634 to 241.
A total of 493 counters remained unchanged, 1,134 were untraded, and 30 were suspended.
Turnover reached 1.36 billion units, valued at RM982.41 million.
Early gains faded as concerns lingered over the outlook for US interest rates following the latest consumer sentiment data, which hinted at slower-than-expected rate cuts, said a dealer.
Revised US data showed consumer sentiment unexpectedly rose to a six-month high in October, following recent rate cuts.
He added that the volatility ahead of the upcoming US presidential election and prolonged geopolitical tensions in the Middle East also weighed on sentiment.
At home, heavyweights weighed on the index as Tenaga Nasional fell 26 sen to RM14.12, likely due to profit-taking after a rise above its target price.
IHH slid seven sen to RM7.43, while Maybank eased six sen to RM10.48.
In contrast, YTL rose seven sen to RM3.07, and Petronas Chemicals added 10 sen to RM5.58, helping to curb further declines in the FBM KLCI.
Newly listed Sorento Capital was flat at 37 sen, while Lotus KFM and Luster Industries gained half-a-sen to 21.5 sen and 6.5 sen, respectively.
XOX fell four sen to 21 sen, and Northeast Group climbed 1.5 sen to 60 sen.
On the index board, the FBM Emas Index lost 8.53 points to 12,212.09, the FBMT 100 Index eased 0.65 of-a-point to 11,921.29, the FBM Emas Shariah Index shed 19.57 points to 12,180.41, the FBM ACE Index dropped 56.99 points to 5,044.02, while the FBM 70 Index edged up 0.88 of-a-point to 17,715.55.
By sector, the Financial Services Index declined 34.51 points to 19,227.52, the Industrial Products and Services Index edged down 0.26 of-a-point to 175.46, and the Energy Index slipped 4.50 points to 842.03.
In contrast, the Plantation Index gained 21.30 points to 7,320.88.
