KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia was lower at midday today on continued profit-taking in selected heavyweights, as investors remained concerned about the global market outlook, a dealer said.
At 12.30 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) declined by 0.34 per cent, or 5.15 points, to 1,534.398 from last Monday’s close of 1,539.54.
The benchmark index opened 1.10 points better at 1,540.64 and moved between 1,533.48 and 1,544.98 throughout the morning trading session.
Market breadth was negative as 532 decliners trumped 262 gainers, while 417 counters were unchanged, 1,124 untraded, and 17 suspended.
Turnover stood at 1.93 billion shares worth RM916.04 million.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the market focus has shifted to the US Federal Reserve policy meeting starting today.
“We believe foreign buying may persist. Hence, (we) anticipate the index to trend within the 1,540-1,550 range today.
“Meanwhile, crude palm oil (CPO) price continues to slide, currently at around the RM3,800 per tonne mark in line with the weak crude oil price that saw Brent crude hovering at around US$60 per barrel level," he told Bernama.
Among the heavyweights, Maybank and Public Bank slipped 2.0 sen each to RM9.98 and RM4.45, respectively. CIMB shed 21 sen to RM6.87, Tenaga Nasional gained 16 sen to RM13.96 while IHH Healthcare was flat at RM7.
In active trade, Permaju earned half-a-sen to 3.5 sen, Ekovest and Velesto eased half-a-sen each to 32.5 sen and 15 sen, respectively, while SFP Tech went down 1.0 sen to 22.5 sen.
On the index board, the FBM Emas Index was 44.58 points lower at 11,396.60, the FBMT 100 Index depreciated 43.14 points to 11,172.12, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index weakened 44.58 points to 11,396.60.
The FBM 70 Index dwindled 84.59 points to 16,047.90, and the FBM ACE Index slid 0.37 of-a-point to 4,624.69.
Across sectors, the Financial Services Index trimmed 180.93 points to 18,095.24, while the Industrial Products and Services Index fell 0.82 of-a-point to 150.97, the Energy Index slipped 3.85 points to 678.86, and the Plantation Index gained 10.96 points to 7,259.58.
