WISMA PUTRA ANNOUNCES MALAYSIA'S AGENDA FOR 79TH UNGA AND SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE

21/09/2024 05:30 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will represent the Prime Minister at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) 2024 and related meetings, from Sept 21 to 28, 2024 in New York, United States (US).

In a statement today, the Foreign Ministry said the General Debate of UNGA 2024 will commence on Sept 24, and this year’s meeting will also feature the Summit of the Future (SOTF) on Sept 22 and 23.

The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said the foreign minister will deliver Malaysia’s National Statement at the SOTF on Sept 22, 2024 (2 am Malaysian time) and the General Debate on Sept 28 (11 pm Malaysian time). Both sessions will be broadcast live via the UN WebTV (https://webtv.un.org/en).

Wisma Putra said Malaysia’s advocacy at the United Nations (UN) will be premised upon three central themes; ‘Defend Principles, Embrace Reforms and Synergise Partnerships’.

It said Malaysia will emphasise the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international law and will call for the reform of international frameworks, to defend and uphold multilateralism as well as the sanctity of international law.

“In realising this, Malaysia will advocate for the strengthening of regional and global partnerships.

“The Foreign Minister will also participate in a series of high-level ministerial meetings including ASEAN, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Commonwealth, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), G77 and China, the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the G20,” read the statement.

The ministry emphasised that among the important issues of focus would be narrowing the development gap between the Global North and South and following up on the recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) Advisory Opinion relating to Palestine.

It said that Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEAN in 2025, will prioritise actions to advance peace, stability and prosperity in collaboration with the UN and other international bodies.

It noted that as a member of the UN since Sept 17 1957, Malaysia reiterates its unwavering support of multilateralism and commitment to global peace, security and prosperity.
