LABUAN, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- A group of China-based heavy industry firms made a working visit to the containerised port of Labuan Liberty Wharf today.

This marks the first-ever visit by a foreign business delegation to the port, sparking potential investments, and reshaping the island’s new manufacturing sector.

The delegation, composed of well-established companies from Hangzhou, included Siemens Energy High Voltage Circuit Breaker Co. Ltd, Laian KLX Industrial Liability Co. Ltd, Chang Zhou KLX Machinery Technology Co. Ltd, InnoVision Capital, and Hangzhou ZhiYi Business Management Co. Ltd.

Labuan Corporation (LC) board member Datuk Seri Simon Liew Shan Wen organised and facilitated the visit.

The delegation received a briefing at the port by Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM), highlighting the port’s facilities, cargo handling capabilities, and its broad network of clients, particularly in China.

MPM managing director Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong assured the visiting companies of the port’s readiness to assist with future ventures on the island.

“We are pleased to welcome the business delegates from Hangzhou, China, and we are prepared to assist in every possible way to ensure the plan’s successful implementation,” he said during the briefing.

Meanwhile, Liew said that the China-based companies are now exploring Labuan’s potential as a manufacturing hub for iron and aluminium products, with raw materials to be sourced from China.

“Several potential sites have been evaluated, and the delegation expressed particular interest in leasing the existing facilities of the Labuan Halal Hub Complex, which is already equipped with warehouses.

“As Labuan's local authority, LC is committed to offering comprehensive support and facilitation to these ventures.

"We are ready to assist in facilitating these companies as they look to establish factories and warehouses here, as we believe this will help create employment and economic spillover in Labuan,” Liew said at the briefing.

He highlighted Labuan’s strategic importance as companies are targeting major energy markets, such as Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) in Malaysia, as well as energy firms in Thailand, the United States, and Mexico.

Liew said this visit is expected to set the stage for long-term collaborations, enhancing Labuan’s position as a key player in the regional and global manufacturing supply chain.
