SARAWAK'S RUMINANT LIVESTOCK TO BE INCREASED TO 25 PCT BY 2030

KUCHING, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development is focused on boosting the development of ruminant livestock in the state, to meet the growing local demand for meat.

Its Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said that the state has set a target to increase the self-sufficiency level (SSL) of beef production, from 15 per cent to 25 per cent by 2030.

He explained that to achieve this target, the ruminant livestock population needs to be increased to 80,000 animals.

“As of 2024, the ruminant livestock population stands at around 35,000, compared with 32,000 in 2023.

“This increase of 3,000 animals has provided my ministry with the momentum to continue strengthening efforts to develop the ruminant livestock industry, including encouraging the private sector's participation in commercial and modern-scale ruminant farming,” he said.

He said this in his reply to a question from Miro Simuh (GPS-Serembu), who inquired about the ministry’s plans for the development of ruminant livestock in Sarawak, such as a blueprint to boost the livestock industry, during the state assembly sitting.

Under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), Abdul Rahman said that a total of RM40 million has been allocated to implement various programmes for ruminant livestock, in line with the state’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030) action plan.
