MOHE TARGETS 300,000 POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS BY 2030

17/11/2024 06:38 PM

MOHE secretary-general Datuk Seri Ir Dr. Zaini Ujang said the current figure is only approximately 100,000, adding that polytechnics play a crucial role as the government is now stepping up focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

“There are currently 35 polytechnics nationwide, with two more under construction in Tawau, Sabah, and Lumut, Perak,” he said during a working visit to Politeknik Besut near Bukit Keluang, here today.

To achieve this target, Zaini urged Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia graduates to further their studies at any polytechnic, including Politeknik Besut, which began operating at its new complex in 2022.

"Politeknik Besut, costing RM190 million, including RM20 million for new equipment, currently has fewer than 400 students. The dormitory can accommodate up to 480 students. It offers three courses: Information Technology, Craft Design, and Batik Fashion Design," he said.

Zaini expressed hope that, with the implementation of certain measures, the student population at the institution will grow to 1,200 within the next two years.
