KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) intends to use the opportunity in the 18th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) and the 11th ADMM-Plus in Vientiane, Laos from November 20 to 21 to highlight Malaysia's issues, views and stance on defence matters .
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is currently in the republic for both meetings, said Malaysia will also take advantage of the platform to prepare for taking over the ASEAN Chairmanship from Laos next year.
"I will use the current space of ADMM and ADMM Plus to hold bilateral meetings with some counterparts and top leaders from Laos, Thailand, India, China, New Zealand, Russia and the ASEAN Secretariat," he said in a statement today.
Mohamed Khaled said during ADMM and ADMM-Plus, there will also be a Commemorative Ceremony of 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Australia and 35th Anniversary of ASEAN-Republic of Korea Dialogue Relations, in addition to ASEAN-China and ASEAN-US Defence Ministers' Informal Meeting.
On the last day of the meeting, a Chairmanship Handover Ceremony to Malaysia will also be held as a symbolic handover of the duties of the Chairman of ADMM and ASEAN, next year.
Earlier, Mohamed Khaled's arrival at Wattay International Airport, Vientiane, today was welcomed by the Chief General Technical Department, Lao People's Army, Brig Gen Chomphet Xayasouk and the Malaysian Ambassador to Laos, Edi Irwan Mahmud.
