JALAN JEDOK-JELI RESIDENTS TIRED OF DEALING WITH REPEATED FLOODINGS IN A YEAR

TANAH MERAH,  Nov 26  (Bernama)  -- Residents along Jalan Jedok-Jeli in  Kampung Kelewek here are tired of dealing with floods at least four to five times a year during the monsoon period in Kelantan.

Checks by Bernama today found that the river near the village had broke its banks today, resulting in water flooding into the main road and the residences and business premises near the road.

Motorcycle workshop owner Mawardi Ibrahim, 50, said heavy rain since early this morning had caused the river, located 200 metres from the road, to flood it, making it hard for vehicles to cross.

"Water has been flooding the road and entering my shop since 10 am as the existing drainage system can’t cope with the spillover from the nearby river.

"If it rains heavily for two hours, water will start to flood the road, causing it to be inaccessible to light vehicles,” he told Bernama today.

Mawardi Ibrahim said he ended up being forced to build a concrete barrier to stop the flow of water from the road from entering his shop.

"It’s tiring, I need to repeatedly move my customers’ motorcycles to ensure they are not damaged due to floodwaters or I’ll suffer losses,” he said.

Meanwhile, resident Khairul Afiq Dahni, 32, expressed hope that the relevant authorities would build a more systematic drainage system along the road as the flooding occurred regularly every year.

"We have to endure this four to five times a year, and our homes will be flooded with waters as high as our thighs.

"The water flows swiftly into our homes, and the vehicles braving the flood waters don’t help the situation either,” he added.

Checks by Bernama at the village also revealed that the floods seem to be caused by clogged drainage that was unable to cope with the water spilling into the main road.
