RESIDENTS IN FLOOD-PRONE AREAS MUST COMPLY WITH DIRECTIVES FROM AUTHORITIES TO EVACUATE - FAHMI

27/11/2024 05:35 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- Residents living in flood-prone areas are reminded to comply with the instructions of the authorities, including being ready to move to designated temporary evacuation centres (PPS).

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the effort was to prevent any untoward incidents from happening during the Northeast Monsoon season which began to hit several states since the beginning of this month.

"This morning after dawn I opened the TikTok app and I watched live how several residents around Kampung Pulai Chondong in Kelantan (sharing their area) were flooded due to heavy rain and the river level had risen which was quite worrying.

"There are some who do live broadcasts, live streaming as if they don't want to move from home even though the water is quite high and when I check (the situation) of the water in the video this morning around 7 o'clock, it looks worrying.

"So I beg everyone, if the authorities issue an order to transfer to PPS, please comply with this instruction for our safety," he said.

To face the Northeast Monsoon, Fahmi, who is also the spokesman for the Unity Government, also advised families involved to prepare special bags to store important items and documents to ensure such items are easily taken with them to the PPS and not lost.

The Northeast Monsoon or better known as the monsoon season in Malaysia is expected to continue until March 2025.

Meanwhile, Fahmi also said the Communication Carnival 2024 which will be held at IWK Eco Park @ Pantai Dalam this Friday and Saturday, aims to increase the people's understanding of the communication initiatives implemented by the government in helping to improve the quality of life of the people.

"In today's world we can communicate easily, now there are various applications that we can use and we have many social media platforms that we can buy and sell and this is all good, but there is also dangers involved.

"So we hope that this carnival can increase awareness among the local community and what we are doing can be beneficial so that the people can use the internet safely, especially children and families," he said.

Fahmi said among the highlights of the carnival are the Rahmah Sale, stamp printing using Pos Malaysia's own photographs, attractive packages from telco companies, exchange of al-Quran manuscripts and summon payment counters.

The Communication Carnival 2024 is one of the initiatives of the Ministry of Communications to attract the interest of the local community related to initiatives organised by ministries and agencies.

More information about the carnival can be found through the karnival.komunikasi.gov.my website as well as the official social media of the Communication Carnival (Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube and TikTok).
