MALAYSIA AND INDONESIA WELCOME GAZA CEASEFIRE DEAL

16/01/2025 09:31 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Indonesia have welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, urging all parties involved to fully commit to its implementation.

Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry in a statement Thursday said the agreement is a much-needed development and a vital first step towards ending the 15-month conflict in Gaza which had caused significant loss of lives, widespread devastation and immense suffering for the Palestinian people.

“The ceasefire will enable fresh delivery of urgently needed humanitarian aid critical to save the lives of remaining Palestinians in Gaza, especially during the current harsh winter season,” said the statement.

Malaysia also commended Egypt, Qatar and the United States (US), and their mediators, for their determination and commitment in achieving the agreement.

“The efforts should now be focused on its effective and full implementation as per the commitment given by the parties concerned,” it said.

The ministry also reiterated Malaysia’s unwavering solidarity with Palestine, highlighting the importance of international unity to push for a permanent solution to one of the most protracted conflicts in the world.

“Malaysia resolutely supports the Palestinian peoples' right to self-determination and the creation of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as the ultimate objective to achieve sustainable peace and stability in the Middle East,” the ministry added.

In welcoming the development, Indonesian Foreign Ministry has stressed on the immediate and comprehensive implementation of the agreement to halt loss of lives in Gaza.

“Indonesia emphasises the importance of rebuilding the lives of people in Gaza through full access to humanitarian aid delivery,” the ministry said in a statement, posted on its X account on Thursday.

The statement also called for the restoration of the role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and support for the reconstruction of Gaza.

It further underlined that lasting peace in Palestine cannot be achieved without the end of Israel’s occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

“This can only be achieved through a two-state solution, based on internationally agreed parameters,” it added.

International media reported that Hamas and Israel have reached a ceasefire agreement, bringing an end to the 15-month conflict in Gaza.

The agreement, mediated by Qatar, will be implemented over three phases, including a 42-day phase with the release of 33 Israeli detainees in exchange for unspecified number Palestinian prisoners.

The ceasefire is set to begin on Sunday, Jan 19, announced Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani late Wednesday.
