PERAK BRACES FOR 3 MILLION VEHICLES DURING CNY

IPOH, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- Nearly three million vehicles are expected to enter Perak via the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and federal roads in the days leading up to the Chinese New Year on Jan 29.

Perak Road Safety Council (MKJR) deputy chairman, Datuk Nor Sham Rahman said traffic heading north through Perak will likely increase starting Jan 27 and 28 and a surge is also expected two days after the celebration on Saturday and Sunday when people return to the federal capital.

"We anticipate that from Tanjung Malim to Parit Buntar, no fewer than 2.5 to 3 million (vehicles), including those using federal roads, will pass through the state, especially during the peak period before Chinese New Year.

"To alleviate traffic congestion, motorists, particularly from Kuala Selangor, Banting, and Sabak Bernam, are advised to use the West Coast Expressway (WCE) to reach Changkat Jering and then re-enter the North-South Expressway (PLUS)," she said.

Nor Sham said this at a press conference after launching a Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with the 2025 Chinese New Year celebration here today. The campaign is a collaboration between MKJR Perak, the Perak branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, the Road Transport Department (RTD), and Petronas at Lotus's Bercham here.

The campaign offers several initiatives. These include free engine oil changes for 200 motorcycles, 200 helmet replacements, and 50 car wash coupons. There will also be exhibition booths featuring government agencies and local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Meanwhile, Nor Sham advised highway users to follow the suggested travel times (TTA) to avoid traffic congestion and adhere to road regulations.

"Highway users are advised to check the schedule before starting their trips to ensure a more comfortable, safe, and efficient journey and to ensure their vehicles are in good condition.

"Perak MKJR advises motorists to plan their journeys during this festive and holiday season due to the expected increase in traffic flow during this time," she said.

She also reminded users to ensure sufficient balance in their e-wallets and Touch 'n Go cards to avoid issues related to insufficient balance at toll plazas.
