NEW DELHI, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- The Bangladesh government has warned against vandalism after protesters, angry over a speech by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, demolished her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence.
“The interim government is committed to ensuring the safety of citizens and their property," said a statement posted on Thursday night on Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus' Facebook page.
It warned against fomenting trouble in the country through provocative acts and said those responsible would be held accountable.
The Dhanmondi-32 house in Dhaka, associated with Mujibur Rahman and his family, was demolished by thousands of people in a protest against Hasina's speech via social media late on Wednesday.
Hasina, 77, has been living in New Delhi since she fled Bangladesh on August 5 in the wake of mass protests against her 15-year rule.
Meanwhile, protesters in different parts of the country on Wednesday and Thursday targeted a number of structures and properties linked to the Hasina administration and her Awami League party leaders.
A crowd set fire to the residence of former president Abdul Hamid in Kishoreganj city, local media reported.
Students vandalised the nameplates of four residential halls of Rajshahi University, calling them "symbols of fascism" and renaming them.
Sheikh Mujib's murals were vandalised in several places.
