KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) plans to expand the organising of courses related to artificial intelligence (AI) not only to journalists and editors but also to the behind-the-scenes staff in the journalism industry.

Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said this is in line with the agency's desire to ensure that the AI courses it conducts are implemented more comprehensively and focused on the targetted participants.

“Actually, we have planned several other courses including for those behind the scenes, not just for journalists and photographers, but also those working in the field of journalism.

“Insya-Allah, we will also bring courses like this to Sabah and Sarawak and we hope that more of our media friends can benefit somehow, if not more, from this AI knowledge, which can help them in their respective fields of work.”

She said this to reporters after attending the launch of the 'AI in the Newsroom' course organised by Bernama, which was officiated by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil here today.

Nur-ul Afida said the Bernama’s ‘AI in the Newsroom’ course, which is the first in its series of AI-related training programmes for media professionals, was made possible with the funds drawn from the RM1 million special allocation announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) celebration in Kuching, Sarawak, last year.

She said Bernama would do its utmost to realise its plans to implement AI courses as mandated by the government.

“For this first course, we have good cooperation from Huawei and Redtone who also brought experts from the United States to share matters related to AI in journalism,” she said.

The two-day course at Huawei Customer Solution Innovation Centre (CSIC), which is being attended by 40 journalists and editors from various media organisations, aims at enhancing understanding of AI and its applications in modern journalism.

Also present were Huawei Malaysia chief executive officer Simon Sun, Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, deputy editor-in-chief (Economic News Service) Azlina Aziz, executive editor (assuming duties of deputy editor-in-chief of International News Service) Mohd Shukri Ishak, head of Management and Finance Sharifah Zaini Syed Zain and head of Commercial Mastura Hassan.
