LAWAS, March 8 (Bernama) -- Residents in Lawas will enjoy a more stable and extensive water supply with the construction of a new water treatment plant in Sungai Lawas Damit.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan stated that the project is expected to benefit residents from Long Tuma to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Merapok, as well as open up opportunities for coverage expansion to Kampung Long Sukang and surrounding areas through the water distribution system.

He mentioned that the new plant will complement the role of the Trusan Water Treatment Plant, which is currently the main source of water supply in the district.

"This new plant will help increase the water supply capacity in line with infrastructure development, especially roads.

“With the allocation received and technical studies conducted, we expect this project to commence this year," he told reporters after the Launching Ceremony of the SPK Trusan Affordable Housing in Lawas today.

According to him, the plant will be operated by the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) as the implementing agency, thus strengthening the government's ability to ensure the community received better access to clean water.

Awang Tengah also announced that the town of Trusan will undergo redevelopment to make it a major stopover destination in northern Sarawak.

As a measure to support development in the area, a new bridge will be built to improve access and facilitate the movement of residents and traders.

"Various new facilities will be provided including modern business premises, markets and trade areas to ensure sustainable economic growth," he said.

He added that Trusan's original identity and uniqueness will be maintained in its development into a modern city to not only become an important economic centre but also a new attraction for tourists.
