MALAYSIA STRENGTHENS SEMICONDUCTOR SUPPLY CHAIN WITH ASEAN MEMBER COUNTRIES- LIEW

12/03/2025 12:29 PM

KUALA LUMPUR,  March 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will continue to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain together with ASEAN member countries, in line with its ASEAN chairmanship this year, said Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong.

He emphasised that Malaysia does not intend to compete with neighbouring countries or other ASEAN member states in its efforts to strengthen supply chains, especially in the semiconductor sector in the region.

"Many say that Malaysia is competing with Vietnam and other neighbouring countries, but the ASEAN spirit is that we do not see our neighbours or ASEAN partners as rivals,” he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Negara today.

Liew said this in response to a supplementary question from Senator Kesavadas Achyuthan Nair who enquired about equitable economic growth among ASEAN members and Malaysia’s plans as the 2025 ASEAN chair in navigating geopolitical and global trade tensions.

According to him, Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore play crucial roles in the global semiconductor industry and must collaborate to address global challenges.

“We hope to strengthen the supply chain so that if there are any disruptions or global issues, we can tackle them together," he added.

Meanwhile, Liew noted that the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is finalising the AEC Strategic Plan 2026-2030, which is set to be launched in May in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit and related meetings.

"This AEC Strategic Plan is expected to be launched alongside the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.

“As the 2025 ASEAN chair, it is important for Malaysia to take a proactive and progressive role in driving ASEAN’s agenda towards realising the AEC Strategic Plan in 2025," he added.
