CANADIAN COUNTERTARIFFS COME INTO FORCE FOLLOWING US MOVES

13/03/2025 02:21 PM

NEW YORK, March 13 (Bernama-dpa) -- Canadian tariffs on US products came into effect on Thursday, in response to the 25 per cent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on steel and aluminium imports, reported German news agency dpa.

From midnight (0400 GMT), Canada applied tariffs on about US$29 billion (US$20 billion) in products imported from the US, including steel and aluminium, computers and sports equipment.

Canadian prime minister designate Mark Carney said the "unjustified" US tariffs hurt Canadian workers.

"We're rightly retaliating — and every dollar from our tariffs will support our workers," he wrote on X.

Carney on Sunday was chosen as the new leader of the Liberal Party, replacing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and is expected to assume the role of prime minister temporarily. He is due to be sworn in on Friday.

Trump argues that excessive steel and aluminium imports threaten US national security.
