SOUTH KOREA: POLICE ON HIGHEST LEVEL OF EMERGENCY DUTY FOR YOON'S IMPEACHMENT RULING

14/03/2025 06:21 PM

SEOUL, March 14 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- Police will be placed under the highest level of emergency duty on the day of the Constitutional Court's ruling on President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment, the acting chief said Friday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, under the order 100 percent of the police force will be mobilised, with around 20,000 officers from 337 units deployed nationwide, Lee Ho-young, acting chief of the National Police Agency, said during a meeting discussing preparations for the day.

"We will minimise social confusion before and after the impeachment ruling by establishing an all-out response system," he said.

To secure the safety of the court and its justices, police will deploy personal security guards, detectives and the special operation unit.

Riot police, equipped with protective gear and chili pepper spray, will be stationed at the National Assembly, the courts and the headquarters of major political parties, among other places.

"We will respond firmly to acts challenging law enforcement authorities, such as the destruction of facilities or assault of police officers, under the principle of zero tolerance," Lee said.

The Constitutional Court has yet to announce the date of its ruling on Yoon's impeachment, though many expect it to happen next week.
