16/03/2025 09:25 PM

GEORGE TOWN, March 16 (Bernama) -- Two volunteer firefighters were injured during a firefighting operation involving two factories and shop in Jalan Patani here today.

One of them was hit by falling debris while the other broke his leg after it got hit by firefighting equipment. They were taken to Penang Hospital for treatment.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) deputy director Endi Sherimi Mohd Azmi said they received an emergency call at 3.07 pm and found the fire spreading rapidly.

The blaze involved two factories producing solvent (thinner) and metal, as well as a wedding planning outlet.

“Our firefighters initially struggled with low water pressure from nearby hydrants but managed to overcome the issue using a 10,000-litre water tanker from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station.

“It took about 65 minutes to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to other premises. About 80 per cent of the affected buildings were destroyed,” Endi Sherimi said.

The cause of the fire and estimated losses are under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
