KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian High Commission in Namibia on Tuesday hosted a commemoration for Nuzul Quran and iftar for more than 150 attendees at the Windhoek Islamic Centre.
Speaking at the event, held in collaboration with the Muslim Women’s Association of Namibia, Charge d’Affaires of Malaysia to Namibia, Datuk Dr. Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, said the celebration marked the revelation of the first verse of the al-Quran to Prophet Muhammad SAW, a moment of deep significance for Muslims globally, including in Malaysia and Namibia.
A statement from the High Commission said Rameez was pleased that many youth had participated in the celebration, adding that the event also aimed to assist those in need during Ramadan while promoting the Malaysia Madani concept abroad.
Islamic Council of Namibia Chairman, Dr Salmaan D Jacoobs, commended Malaysia’s continued support for the ummah in Namibia, particularly through its engagements with the Windhoek Islamic Centre, the statement added.
The highlight of the event was the recital of the Quran by Imam Sheikh Mahmoud from Egypt, as well as the recital of the first verse of the Quran that was revealed to Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel in Makkah.
Muslims make up about 2 per cent of Namibia’s 3.1 million population.
