MERAKI DAAT WINS UNDP M’SIA ISLAND INNOVATION CHALLENGE

LABUAN, March 22 (Bernama) -- The Meraki Daat Initiative has been selected as one of the winners of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Malaysia Island Innovation Challenge. 

In a statement to Bernama today, its founder Michelle de la Harpe said the announcement by UNDP described the initiative as recognising and empowering innovative solutions for island communities.

“Meraki Daat's winning submission as officially released this week is a "Dive and Build" initiative, which integrates marine conservation with sustainable construction, using recycled plastic eco-bricks.

“This achievement marks a significant milestone in its mission to drive eco-sustainability, community-based tourism and ocean conservation.

“It also positions Sabah on the global map for sustainable development, eco-tourism and innovation,” she said.

Michelle said the Dive and Build merges marine ecosystem restoration and sustainable waste management.

“Divers collect and repurpose ocean plastics, transforming them into eco-bricks for infrastructure projects within island communities.

“This solution addresses plastic pollution and fosters sustainable development by providing eco-friendly building materials. 

She added these materials could be used for landscaping, community centres, schools, tourism facilities, pathways, and even small roads.

“The success was made possible through collaboration with international bodies, local government agencies and industry stakeholders,” she said.

Michelle said the Dive and Build innovation has the potential to be a game-changer, addressing environmental challenges and creating economic opportunities. It leverages Sabah's rich marine biodiversity and strong tourism sector.

“Meraki Daat looks forward to expanding its initiatives, fostering greater partnerships, and creating a lasting impact in ocean conservation and sustainable tourism,” she said.

The UNDP Malaysia Island Innovation Challenge, launched in August 2024, aims to promote innovative local waste management solutions on Malaysian islands, focusing on sustainable tourism, community well-being, and environmental sustainability.
