KUANTAN, March 26 (Bernama) -- As most families prepare for Aidilfitri, the situation at Pak Nik’s home at the Kampung Kempadang Hardcore Poor Housing Programme unfolds a different reality.
“We can barely afford to buy new clothes even if it is only once every two years. We wear and eat whatever we have every Raya,” said Nik Amran Nik Soh, 60, affectionately known as Pak Nik.
The 60-year-old disabled father of 14 said it was a huge struggle, especially with his deteriorating health. Pak Nik is facing health and mobility issues caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
“I used to do odd jobs but after turning 60 and my health declining, it has become much harder to earn a living,” said Pak Nik, who moves around using a cane.
According to Pak Nik, his wife, Manis Mat Din, 41, is a seasonal worker who only earns a few ringgit a day.
With limited finances, Pak Nik said he prioritised his children's needs over festive preparations, which are kept to a minimum.
However, he is grateful for the support he has received from various parties, including the federal and state governments, non-governmental organisations, and individuals.
“It was a relief when my two children in primary school and two in secondary school received the Early Schooling Aid which allowed us to prepare for the new school term accordingly,” he said.
Pak Nik was even more delighted upon learning that the Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) was also distributed in conjunction with Aidilfitri, providing him with some relief from his financial load.
“We are a big family…let the little ones have new clothes so that they can feel the joy of celebrating Raya. As for us adults, we can manage,” he said with a smile.
The government began distributing the STR Phase 2 payout on Monday, with an allocation of RM1.7 billion, to nearly nine million recipients.
The allocation for STR and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) have been increased by RM3 billion or 30 per cent, bringing the total to RM13 billion, which reflects the success of the MADANI Economic Framework in optimising savings and channelling additional funds as part of the government’s commitment to uplifting the people’s economic wellbeing.
The effort to raise the baseline aims to empower vulnerable groups, enhance access to education and healthcare and create income opportunities to reduce inequality and improve people’s wellbeing.
When asked about Raya dishes, Pak Nik said they would exchange food with their neighbours, allowing them to enjoy a variety of dishes.
“I am grateful for being able to celebrate Syawal with my children despite our hardships,” he added.
