KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 (Bernama) -- All citizens in this country must understand and respect each other and accept diversity to forge a united country.

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said that instilling unity is not only the government's responsibility, but it is a shared responsibility.

"Therefore, I would like to invite all parents, teachers, community leaders, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the private sector to join hands in implementing the value of unity in their daily lives.

"The family is the first institution that shapes the values and thinking of the younger generation. Parents need to be role models in instilling noble values, such as respect and tolerance, in their children from an early age," he said in his speech at the NGO Family Of Charity Premier Iftar here today.

He also called on all parties to take a role in fostering the value of moderation (wasatiyyah) among the younger generation.

"This value is important in forming an attitude of openness, tolerance and mutual respect for each other. With this moderate attitude, we can ensure that our society is not easily influenced by elements of extremism that can destroy the harmony of the country.

“As Malaysians, we must continue to strive to strengthen the harmony of the country. Let us together reject all forms of extremism, narrow-minded racism and fanaticism that can destroy the peace we enjoy today,” he said.
