PRIORITISE ROAD SAFETY THIS RAYA SEASON - LEE

29/03/2025 02:18 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- The Alliance for a Safe Community has urged all motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians to prioritise safety to prevent accidents and ensure a safe journey home during this festive season.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, said over two million road users are expected to travel across the country to reunite with loved ones for Aidilfitri.

“While this festive season brings happiness, it also sees a significant increase in road traffic, raising safety concerns,” he said in a statement today.

In this regard, Lee urged road users to take necessary precautions, including planning their journeys to avoid peak travel times, which would help reduce congestion and fatigue.

“Check your vehicle’s condition (tyres, brakes, lights and fluids) before departure. Use seat belts and ensure children are secured in proper child restraints,” he added.

Lee, who is also a Road Safety Council member, stressed the importance of staying alert on the road, avoiding distractions such as using a mobile phone while driving, and taking breaks every two hours to prevent fatigue.

“Stay focused. Speeding, sudden lane changes and tailgating are major causes of accidents,” he said.

He reminded all road users to comply with traffic laws, observe speed limits and road signs, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Motorcyclists, he said, must wear helmets and high-visibility clothing.

Lee also called for patience and courtesy among motorists, as heavy traffic is anticipated during the festive season.

“Remain calm and avoid aggressive driving. Give way to emergency vehicles and respect other road users. Both motorists and motorcyclists need to be mindful of pedestrians, particularly children and the elderly. Drivers must be extra cautious in residential areas and near Hari Raya festivities.

“This festive season, let’s make road safety a shared responsibility. A moment of carelessness can lead to a lifetime of regret. I wish everyone a safe journey and a joyful Hari Raya with family and friends,” he added.
