KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump has trumpeted an imminent announcement of a major trade deal related to “a big and highly respected country” on Thursday.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he would hold a news conference at 10 am (Washington time) at the Oval Office to unveil the deal which he described as a “MAJOR TRADE DEAL WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF A BIG, AND HIGHLY RESPECTED, COUNTRY.”
Trump said that the deal would be the first of many but stopped short of providing further details, including which country was involved.
The timing of the announcement has drawn attention, coinciding with reports of high-level trade negotiations between the US and China taking place in Switzerland.
According to a report by Anadolu Ajansi (AA), China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday confirmed that Vice Premier He Lifeng, who oversees China-US economic and trade affairs, is scheduled to meet with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Switzerland to discuss tariff-related matters.
The meeting was reportedly requested by the US, according to China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian.
The talks follow a recent escalation in trade tensions, with Washington imposing tariffs of up to 245 per cent on Chinese imports, prompting Beijing to respond with 125 per cent levies on all US imports, according to the Anadolu report.
