KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- Three new faces are among five individuals appointed to the Supervisory Council of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) today, for a two-year term ending Aug 31, 2027.
The appointment letters were presented to them by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil at Wisma Bernama, here.
Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid has been appointed as the new President of the Supervisory Council, replacing Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin, also a High Court Judge.
Azhar, 61, holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
A native of Batu Pahat, Johor, Azhar has held several key positions since 1989, including Head of the Prosecution and Appeals Division at the Attorney General’s Chambers and State Legal Advisor for Terengganu.
The two other new faces on the council are Prof Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and Anand Kumar Selvam, Head of Media and Communications of the Johor Royal Press Office.
Two existing council members were reappointed, namely Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communications, as Government Representative, and Farrah Naz Abd Karim, Group Editor of New Straits Times, as Media Organisation Representative.
The appointments of the President and council members were made with the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
The Bernama Supervisory Council is responsible for ensuring the agency’s compliance with the Bernama Act 1967 in fulfilling its roles and objectives.
During the ceremony, Fahmi also presented appointment letters to the Chairman and 20 members of the Bernama Board of Governors, who will serve for the same term.
Present at the event were Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, Ministry of Communications secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, acting deputy editor-in-chief (News Service) Mohd Shukri Ishak, deputy editor-in-chief (Economic News Service) Azlina Aziz and Supervisory Council/Board of Governors secretary Sharifah Zaini Syed Zain.
