MELAKA, Oct 14 (Bernama) — Malaysia has strengthened its position as a major destination for hosting international sporting events in the region through the world-class international football match, "Stars of Uruguay 2025 - Global Football Friendly in Malaysia", which took place at the Hang Jebat Stadium, Krubong, here last night.
The Corporate Communications Unit of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) informed in a statement that the friendly match successfully attracted the attention of local and international football fans.
"This prestigious event, organised by Cohesion Prima and CRIC Global with the support of MOTAC, is in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign and also received cooperation from the Melaka state government, which is implementing the Visit Melaka 2024-2026 campaign.
"The presence of spectators at Hang Jebat Stadium has provided a positive impact on the domestic tourism sector, especially in Melaka, through an increase in accommodation bookings, recreational activities, and tourist spending," the statement said.
In the same statement, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the successful organisation of the event proves Malaysia's capability as a credible host for international-scale sporting events.
"Organising events like this is in line with the government's aspiration to strengthen the sports tourism segment in an effort to attract more tourists to Malaysia in conjunction with VM2026.
"It is also aligned with the Malaysia MADANI principle, which emphasises aspects of sustainability, advancement, and inclusivity in national development," he said.
He added that the presence of world-class players in the match further brightened the atmosphere and elevated Malaysia's image as a dynamic, competitive tourism destination, rich in high-impact experiences for international tourists.
In the match last night, Uruguay continued to prove their dominance by registering a second consecutive victory after defeating Uzbekistan 2-1 in the friendly match at the Hang Jebat Stadium.
Earlier, in the first friendly match at Bukit Jalil National Stadium last Friday, Uruguay edged out the Dominican Republic 1-0.
