TEACHERS NEED TO LEVERAGE DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN LINE WITH CURRENT NEEDS - FAHMI

KUALA PILAH, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Teachers are advised to leverage digital technology, such as virtual learning platforms, artificial intelligence (AI), interactive applications and open digital resources, in efforts to make teaching and learning sessions more engaging and aligned with current needs.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said educators these days are not just imparting knowledge, but also serve as architects of digital learning, guiding students towards self-directed and creative learning.

"Students must also be tech-savvy, think critically and be ethical in their use of cyberspace, and their ability to adapt to new technology will become an important asset to the country's future,” he said in a speech at the Kuala Pilah District Education Office’s Digital Carnival here today.

The text of his speech was read out by Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Infrastructure and Communications) Mano Verabathran, who officiated the event on behalf of the minister.

Fahmi added that although the digital world offers various benefits, especially in the field of teaching and learning, the public must be vigilant of the risks and challenges that exist, including those related to the Internet, AI and cybersecurity.

"As such, the Communications Ministry, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), launched the Safe Internet Campaign in mid-January to strengthen public literacy levels regarding online safety and protecting oneself from cyber threats,” he said.

He said a key focus of the campaign is to ensure children under 13 are not allowed to have social media accounts, while those aged 13 and above must use them responsibly and prudently.

Fahmi, however, said that based on the latest developments, the government is considering a proposal to raise the minimum age limit for using social media to 16 years to ensure safety and curb social ills among children.

On today's carnival, he said it was not merely a competition or an exhibition, but a stage to ensure teachers and students could truly integrate technology into the teaching and learning process effectively and meaningfully.

"The initiative and commitment shown are a clear indication that Kuala Pilah not only welcomes the government's call, but is also a leader in digital education change at the grassroots level,” he said.
