MALAYSIA WILL CONSIDER MEDIATING ROLE IN SUDAN CONFLICT - MOHAMAD ALAMIN

06/11/2025 08:27 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- The government will consider the view that Malaysia should play a mediating role in peace efforts in Sudan, said Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin.

He said the matter needs to be discussed in detail, as the ongoing conflict in Sudan also affects Malaysia’s interests.

“This is also our priority to see that country return to peace. Malaysia has significant interests and investments in Sudan,” he said when winding up the committee-level debate on the Supply Bill 2026 for the ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Mohamad said Malaysia has experience in mediating several conflicts, including serving as a facilitator for peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia.

Earlier, Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol), during the debate session, asked whether Malaysia would leverage its position and good relations within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to lead a peace initiative for Sudan.

Media reports also quoted the Ambassador of the Republic of the Sudan to Malaysia Hassan Abdel Salam Omer as saying that Sudan regards Malaysia as a trusted partner and a leading voice in advocating for global peace.

Meanwhile, Mohamad said the Malaysian government has channelled RM74 million in humanitarian aid to Palestine through the Humanitarian Trust Fund for the People of Palestine (AAKRP).

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also recently announced an additional RM100 million in aid as part of Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to support humanitarian initiatives and the reconstruction of Gaza.

The Dewan Rakyat sitting will resume on Monday.
