IPOH, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The Perak Department of Environment (DOE) has collected chemical samples, allegedly linked to the deaths of 17 cows in Taman Tronoh Baru, Batu Gajah, after the animals were believed to have grazed on contaminated grass on Nov 5.

Its director Datuk Dr Mohammad Ezani Mat Saleh said the samples were collected this morning and sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis to determine the type of chemicals which were dumped in the area.

“The samples we collected were taken from the solid material discarded at the site, while the state Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) collected samples from the carcasses.

“The samples have been sent to the Chemistry Department, and the results are expected within a week to determine the nature of the discarded material, and whether it originated from industrial activity,” he said when contacted by Bernama, today.

Yesterday, a farmer, R. Nithiananthan, 38, suffered losses amounting to about RM50,000 due to the incident, and a police report has been lodged for further action.

Mohammad Ezani said detailed investigations are being carried out, in collaboration with the police, the state DVS, and the Batu Gajah District Council (MDBG), to identify those responsible.

He added that any individuals found to be involved in the irresponsible act would be prosecuted under Section 34(b) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

“We are tracking down the suspects involved, as this is a serious offence that has resulted in death. We also urge anyone with information to come forward and assist the state DOE in the investigation,” he said.
