KENINGAU, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Addressing clean water supply issues in several settlements in the Tulid state constituency will be a key priority for Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Datin Rufinah Pengeran should she win the 17th Sabah State Election.
Rufinah, 50, who is also the PKR Wanita vice-chief, said her visits to villages around Tulid in recent years had given her firsthand insight into the struggles of residents facing frequent water supply disruptions.
In this regard, the former teacher said that her main campaign strategy was to highlight clean water supply as a fundamental issue requiring urgent attention, in line with aspirations to develop the state’s interiors.
“I’ve been to the villages in Sungai Pegalan and Trusmadi and seen for myself how much the residents are hoping for a long-term solution to the water supply issue. They’ve been raising the same problem repeatedly, but so far, no comprehensive solution has been implemented,” she told Bernama.
Commenting on the record 14-cornered contest for the Tulid seat, Rufinah said it gave voters more choices and created a more mature and competitive political scene.
“With so many candidates in the race, the people will assess them on their track record and commitment to solving basic issues like water supply, economic opportunities and the future of young people. In the end, it’s the candidates’ sincerity in their work that will set them apart,” she said.
The Sabah PKR Wanita chief also urged registered voters in the constituency to make their choices based on community needs, while expressing hope that the lingering water supply problem would be resolved immediately and comprehensively.
Tulid, located about 170 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu and part of the Pensiangan parliamentary constituency, was contested for the first time in the previous state election, where Flovia Ng of Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) won with a majority of 544 votes.
Polling for the 17th Sabah state election, covering 73 state assembly seats, is set for Nov 29, while early voting will be held on Nov 25.
According to Election Commission (EC) statistics, a total of 1,784,843 voters are eligible to exercise their rights in this state election, comprising 1,760,417 ordinary voters, 11,697 military personnel and their spouses, and 12,729 police personnel and their spouses.
