IPOH, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- The Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) is carrying out repair works and cleanup efforts at the Teluk Batik beach area near Lumut, which was badly affected by a high tide phenomenon and large waves since last week.
According to the council’s Teluk Batik Management and Tourism Unit, the beach area experienced high tides and strong waves from Nov 23 to 25, and was not affected by tropical storm Senyar, which has been reported to hit the country since yesterday.
“The high tide phenomenon and large waves caused erosion and uprooted several trees, while facilities near the beach also sustained damage,” it said in a statement today.
It added that the extent of losses involving damaged facilities in the area is still being assessed by the relevant department.
MPM has cordoned off the Teluk Batik beach area from all water activities since Nov 25 and is awaiting reports from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and the Civil Defence Force (APM) before reopening, once sea conditions have calmed and the weather is deemed safe.
On Nov 26, Bernama reported that a rare phenomenon of two-metre-high waves striking the Teluk Batik shoreline had caused severe coastal erosion over the preceding three days.
A check at the scene found that about 200 metres of coastline had been eroded, uprooting coconut and ketapang trees and causing the beach surface to drop significantly.
