TENCENT’S NEW KL OFFICE MARKS STRONGER DIGITAL INVESTMENT IN MALAYSIA -- GOBIND

01/12/2025 02:54 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- The opening of Chinese tech conglomerate Tencent Holdings Ltd’s new office in Malaysia reflects stronger long-term digital investment and reinforces the country’s position as an emerging regional technology hub, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said.

This follows Tencent’s launch of its new office at Menara 1 Sentrum here today, establishing a 500-person regional hub.

Gobind said Tencent has been operating in Malaysia for over a decade and has been a steady and trusted partner in the country’s growth story.

“For Malaysia, this means more than an office opening as it brings investment, job creation and skills development, while for Tencent it provides access to talent, innovation and regional markets.

“Together, we are advancing a shared vision of digital leadership that benefits the people of Malaysia,” he said at the launching ceremony here today.

He said Malaysia will also serve as one of Tencent’s key international hubs for global tech (technology), digital innovation and customer experience.

“This means opportunities for young Malaysian talent, as I understand they have a long list of vacancies and have been working closely with educational institutions to provide access to local graduates,” he said.

Gobind added that the company’s platforms, from games and content services to digital payment interoperability, already play a significant role in supporting tourism, the creative industries and digital commerce.

“These are valuable contributions, but more importantly, they reflect the broader value of having major digital players commit to Malaysia in the long term,” he said.

He further said he welcomes Tencent’s role as a partner for Visit Malaysia 2026, which is expected to help draw a larger number of foreign tourists to the country.

“On e-sports, Tencent is supporting the showcase of Malaysian culture at this year’s SEA Games closing ceremony, and has its sights (set on supporting) our hosting of the SEA Games in 2027.

“Tencent also has plans to work with us and share its expertise in healthy gaming and the development of e-sports,” he said.

He emphasised that Malaysia benefits when digital players invest with a long-term view, and said Tencent is a strong example.

“It conveys investors’ confidence, symbolises strength in Malaysia’s digital policy landscape and, most importantly, aligns with national priorities to develop into an artificial intelligence nation by 2030,” he said.
