KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- Genting Malaysia Berhad (GENM) and its workers’ union made history today with the signing of the 14th Collective Agreement (CA), which raises the minimum wage of the company’s employees to RM1,800 per month, up from the statutory rate of RM1,700.
The agreement also provides a 10 per cent salary adjustment for eligible employees, with backdated payments for the period of August to October this year disbursed yesterday (Nov 30).
Other provisions in the CA include revised allowances, expanded medical and outpatient benefits for employees and their immediate family members, improved reimbursement for transportation related to medical treatment, enhanced death benefits and adjustments to annual salary increments.
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, in his speech at the event, said the CA is an effective instrument for improving employees’ wages.
“Well done to the negotiators from both sides. This is a real win-win situation… and most importantly, I was told the negotiations were completed in just three months. In the end, almost 10,000 Genting workers will benefit,” he said.
Sim also reminded employers not to use the RM1,700 minimum wage as the benchmark for starting salaries, noting that it is intended only for the most basic and low-skilled jobs.
He said the government provides salary guidelines for various skilled positions, including engineers, graphic designers and journalists, to help employers and employees negotiate fair wages.
“The government also offers incentives through the Progressive Wage Policy and subsidies to companies, enabling workers to receive higher salaries. As a result, employees are benefiting by between RM200 and RM300 under the wage policy,” he said.
The CA was signed by GENM deputy president Lee Thiam Kit, while Resorts World Genting (RWG) was represented by chief operating officer Aaron Chia, senior vice-president (Human Resources) Tan Boo Chuan and vice-president of Manpower and Compensation Yun Leong Yu.
Representing the GENM Workers’ Union were its president, Sikindar Ibrahim, deputy president Mohd Isa Nordin, secretary Lawrence A/L Saiman and treasurer Tan Cheng Fei.
Meanwhile, Lee said the agreement reflects the shared commitment of the management and the Workers’ Union to maintain industrial harmony at GENM.
He said the CA is not just a legal document but also symbolises the spirit of cooperation, understanding and mutual respect between employers and employees - the foundation of a stable, fair and progressive working relationship.
“With this agreement, we will ensure that employee well-being continues to be safeguarded, in line with the company’s goal of moving forward.
“I hope this spirit of cooperation continues to grow, not only through the CA but also in our efforts to enhance productivity, innovation and the company’s competitiveness,” he said.
The CA takes effect on Aug 1 and remains valid until July 31, 2028, covering all legally employed GENM staff.
