ASEAN MUST STRENGTHEN CYBERSECURITY AS DIGITAL ADOPTION GROWS - AWS

LAS VEGAS, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- ASEAN countries, including Malaysia need stronger cyber protection as the region accelerates digital adoption, said Amazon Web Services (AWS).

AWS chief information security officer CJ Moses said cyber threats are increasingly connected to physical threats, which organisations must manage together.

He noted that attackers often exploit online systems that are not properly secured, including outdated software and weak access controls.

“Many companies and government agencies still neglect basic cyber hygiene, such as regular software patching and multi-factor authentication, increasing vulnerability to attacks. These basic security issues are the largest risk for businesses, governments and small companies across ASEAN,” he said in an exclusive interview.

He spoke to Bernama on the sidelines of AWS re:Invent 2025, the company’s largest technology conference, which gathers around 60,000 industry players and runs from Dec 1 to 5 in Las Vegas.

Moses said that to counter threats, AWS uses advanced threat intelligence tools such as MADPOT and Mithra systems to detect attacks early and provide insight into malicious activity, helping AWS protect its customers.

“The systems track how attackers operate, including scanning, reconnaissance and exploitation of vulnerabilities. We learn from these actions to strengthen our security and prevent attacks before they happen,” he said.

For Malaysia, Moses said as cloud adoption and artificial intelligence-driven system expand, organisations must strengthen cyber hygiene to protect sensitive data and digital infrastructure.

“Improving cyber hygiene is critical for ASEAN countries, including Malaysia, as cloud use and AI adoption grow, supporting safer digital-driven economic growth in the region.

He added that strong identity and access management, along with controlled privileges, are essential measures to reduce risks.

“Proactive, layered cybersecurity is vital for ASEAN to maintain trust and resilience as the region continues its digital transformation.
