KUCHING, Dec 3 (Bernama) -- Sarawak has embarked on an extensive bridge construction initiative worth RM7.316 billion, aiming to significantly improve transportation links and accessibility across the state.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the large-scale programme comprises 143 projects, reflecting the state government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure, particularly in rural regions.
“The programme includes 21 major bridges valued at RM6.92 billion, alongside the rural bridge transformation programme (RBTP), which allocates RM396 million for 122 rural bridge projects.
“RBTP aims to replace old, damaged wooden bridges with safe, modern reinforced concrete structures and build new links in rural areas,” he said when winding up for the ministry at the Sarawak State Assembly sitting here today.
Uggah said the Public Work Department had completed eight major bridges, which, among others, include the Muara Lassa Bridge, Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge, Batang Saribas Bridge and Datuk Amar Juma’ani Bridge.
He said apart from the completed projects, the remaining works of the major bridges are on track, where 10 bridges are currently under construction, with nine of them expected to be completed next year.
