ACEH, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- Econsave Cash & Carry Sdn Bhd (Econsave), in collaboration with Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCARE), is distributing humanitarian aid worth approximately RM100,000 to flood victims in Sumatra, as part of initial support for post-disaster recovery efforts.

Econsave Southern Region manager Mas Imran Adam said the assistance comprises basic necessities such as food supplies, as well as tarpaulins and the establishment of a communal kitchen to support affected residents.

“The communal kitchen that was donated will operate daily for 10 days starting yesterday to provide hot meals for about 200 residents in the village,” he said after presenting the aid as part of the Sumatra Flood Humanitarian Mission in Kampung Gedumbak, Langkahan, here.

He added that 300 pieces of tarpaulin were also donated to 150 displaced families, helping them rebuild a sense of shelter and security, as they begin the long process of recovery after the floods.

He said Kampung Gedumbak, home to about 1,000 residents from 450 families, was selected for the assistance, as it had received limited aid, and was among the areas worst affected by the major floods which struck the region on Nov 26.

“Almost 90 per cent of the houses in this village suffered serious damage or collapse,” he said.

Meanwhile, MyCARE project manager Noorsyazly Rameli said the aid mission involved 15 personnel, with two operational teams deployed in North Sumatra and Aceh.

He added that the communal kitchen in Kampung Gedumbak was implemented in collaboration with Islamic Relief Indonesia, with funding contributed by MyCARE and Econsave.

In addition, a cow was donated for use by the communal kitchen to help ensure a sufficient food supply throughout the operation period.

“The destruction faced by residents here is immense, and the recovery process is expected to take a long time.

“Therefore, we hope that Malaysians will continue to keep the victims in their prayers, and contribute through the MyCARE fund so that follow-up assistance can be sustained,” he said.
