BANGKOK, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) described the success of the national track cycling camp in winning four gold medals and one silver at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games here as a very proud achievement.
MNCF president Datuk Amarjit Singh said the achievement exceeded the initial target of only two gold medals, thus proving the capabilities and potential of the national track cycling squad among regional countries.
Amarjit also expressed his appreciation to the entire team including athletes, coaches, the National Sports Council (MSN) and the National Sports Institute (ISN) for the strong support given throughout the preparations for the biennial sports games and during the competition.
“I think the track cycling camp has shown its greatness. From a target of only two gold medals, we managed to win four gold medals, double the target, in addition to one silver. This is a proud achievement.
“Congratulations to the entire team including MSN and ISN for the support given. The sweet success achieved by this track cycling camp is the result of the strong cooperation of all parties in the national cycling camp,” he said when met here.
The national track cycling camp proved its superiority when it won four of the five golds contested in this edition.
The four golds were contributed by Muhammad Ridwan Sahrom in the men's keirin event, Nur Aisyah Zubir (women's scratch), the trio of Muhammad Fadhil Mohd Zonis, Mohamad Akmal Nazimi Jusena and Muhammad Ridwan in the men's team sprint event, as well as the quartet of Azim Aliyas, Hafiq Jafri, Yusri Shaari and New Joe Lau in the men's team pursuit event.
In addition, Malaysia also added to its medal collection when Joe Lau won silver in the men's point race event.
Meanwhile, commenting on preparations for the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia, Amarjit said MNCF would begin drawing up initial plans by focusing on organising more track cycling events since the country has its own velodrome facilities.
He said his party would hold preliminary discussions with the Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) to examine the proposed venue and overall planning for the event.
“For 2027, of course we will start making preparations. We want to hold all the track events. Here there are only five selected events, but in Malaysia we want to do it like in 2017 with full track and other disciplines.
“It is still early, but the work must start now. What we see here, if this momentum can be maintained, we can succeed,” he said.
For the record, a total of 13 events involving track cycling were contested in the 2017 edition with Malaysia, reinforced by world-class cyclists led by Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, successfully ‘sweeping’ 11 of them.
