STATIONARY GPS SIGNAL AN OMEN OF AMMAR’S FATAL CRASH

JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 27 (Bernama) -- A mother’s concern over her son’s stationary GPS signal proved to be an omen of the tragedy involving Ammar Azwar Asri, 21, who was killed in a three-vehicle accident on the Senai–Desaru Expressway early this morning.

The victim’s uncle, Suhaimi Abu Naim, 58, said Ammar’s mother grew worried when her eldest son’s mobile phone GPS remained stationary from 5.17 am.

“Several phone calls were made but went unanswered, prompting the mother to try to think positively by assuming that her son’s phone battery might have depleted.

“However, her anxiety grew, so she checked the last known location using Google and asked her younger brother, an auxiliary police officer in Johor, to check the area.

“After checking the location where the GPS last stopped, it was confirmed that a road accident had occurred and my nephew was involved,” he told reporters at the Forensic Department of Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI) today.

According to the retired soldier, Ammar was driving a Proton Saga back to his hometown to attend several family functions, including his cousin’s engagement ceremony, a housewarming doa selamat, and preparations for another cousin’s wedding.

Suhaimi added that Ammar was initially reluctant to drive early in the morning and wanted to rest before his journey.

He described Ammar as cheerful, well-liked, and someone who often enlivened family gatherings.

“He was the source of laughter in the family. His loss is both shocking and difficult to accept.

“I was informed that Ammar had recently started working as a technician at Rapid Pengerang and had received two months’ salary. The last time I saw him was a week ago at a family wedding,” he said, adding that Ammar is due to be laid to rest at the Kampung Parit Siba Muslim Cemetery in Batu Pahat tonight.

Seri Alam Police Chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the pre-dawn three-vehicle accident at Kilometre 45.6 of the expressway likely occurred when one vehicle entered the opposite lane, resulting in a collision that claimed two lives.

Sohaimi said police received information on the incident involving a Proton Wira, Proton Saga and Perodua Myvi at 5.35 am.

The collision caused  both vehicles to spin before coming to a stop in the left and right lanes, while the Perodua Myvi, driven by a 23-year-old woman and travelling behind the Proton Saga, was unable to avoid the crash and collided with the Proton Wira.

In addition to Ammar, the other fatality was identified as the Proton Wira driver, Yen Jian Yao, 19, from Kangkar Pulai. 

Meanwhile, three injured passengers in the Proton Wira were identified as Angel Loo An Qi, 15, Wong Teck Ong, 17, while another individual who sustained serious injuries has yet to be identified.

The two injured occupants of the Perodua Myvi were identified as Nur Nalea Nazlin Mahmud, 23, an engineer at the Rapid Pengerang Oil & Gas Project, and Mohamad Adam Satiman, 25, a mechanical installation technician at the same company.
