PAS TO STAY OUT OF NEW PERLIS STATE CABINET - TAKIYUDDIN

30/12/2025 02:39 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 (Bernama) -- PAS has decided not to take part in the Perlis State Executive Council (Exco) to be formed by newly appointed Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah.

In fact, PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said all incumbent PAS Exco members will step down from their posts in a show of solidarity following the resignation of former Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli last week.

He said the decision was made after PAS central leadership assessed and deliberated the current political situation concerning the Perlis state government and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

“PAS, however, remains committed to maintaining its role and presence within the Perlis state government, in line with the mandate given by the people in the 15th General Election (GE15),” he said in a statement today.

Takiyuddin said that PAS urges all parties to reflect on recent developments, draw lessons from them, and take necessary steps to strengthen public confidence in PN.

“PAS also expresses its readiness to lead PN to strengthen the coalition’s organisation and prepare for upcoming state elections and the 16th General Election,” he said.

Takiyuddin also reaffirmed PAS’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, democratic principles, constitutional monarchy and the wisdom of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, in the interests of the state and its people.

Abu Bakar, 57, the Kuala Perlis assemblyman, was sworn in as the new Perlis Menteri Besar on Sunday following the voluntary resignation of Mohd Shukri, the Sanglang assemblyman from PAS, on Dec 25 due to health reasons.

Separately, PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said a special meeting will be convened soon to decide on a new PN chairman following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation from the post, effective Jan 1, 2026.

Muhyiddin announced his decision earlier today via a Facebook statement after leading the coalition for five years since its official registration on Aug 7, 2020.

Several PN leaders have since followed suit, including Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who will step down as PN secretary-general, also effective Jan 1, and Johor PN chairman Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, the Bukit Kepong assemblyman.
