SUNGAI PETANI, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister, Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, has said that silat is far more than just a sport or a means of self-defence, describing it as a crucial vessel for building youth character and identity.
Therefore, he believes it deserves to be elevated to the highest level, adding that his ministry is prepared to meet with all silat associations to chart a strategic future for this heritage art.
"We see how silat acts as a medium to unite us all, and as a vessel for shaping the character of our youth. This is precisely why I believe it is vital for us to raise the status and prestige of silat to a higher level," he told reporters.
He was speaking after officiating the national level 2025/2026 Datuk Dr Raja Abdul Majid National Open Cup Silat championship here last night.
"We will explore initiatives that can be taken to nurture more silat athletes, to represent their states and also progress to the national and international stages," he said.
Themed Gema Pahlawan MADANI, the championship will see nearly 2,000 participants vie for the top titles.
