KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 1 (Bernama) -- Alam Flora Sdn Bhd (Alam Flora) collected approximately 3.2 tonnes of waste from three major areas in Kuala Lumpur during the 2026 New Year’s Eve celebrations, 11 per cent less than the 3.6 tonnes collected in 2025.

Its chief executive officer, Shariman Yusuf Mohamed Zain the cleanup operation targeted high-traffic public areas, including Bukit Bintang, Dataran Merdeka and the vicinity of Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC) from 10 pm on New Year’s Eve till 8 am today to ensure the city was restored to a clean and welcoming state at the start of the new year.

”KLCC recorded the highest amount of waste at 1.4 tonnes, followed by Bukit Bintang (one tonne) and Dataran Merdeka (0.8 tonnes),” he said in a statement today, adding that 152 personnel, including management staff, pre-cleaning teams, drivers and general crews, were involved in the clean up operation.

A total of 36 660-litre and 25 240-litre mobile garbage bins were strategically placed to facilitate proper waste disposal, three compactor trucks were deployed for efficient waste collection, and water jets were used to wash pavements, particularly in high-footfall areas, he said.

He also noted that this year’s waste collection was relatively manageable, especially at Bukit Bintang.

“Crowd sizes at each location may vary depending on public preferences for celebration spots. Nevertheless, our teams remain fully prepared to manage waste collection efficiently, regardless of turnout,” Shariman Yusuf said, as he stressed Alam Flora’s ongoing dedication to environmental sustainability and urban cleanliness, aligning with the company’s mission to enhance community well-being and contribute to a greener future.

“The initiative also reflects Malakoff’s commitment and responsible operations, aligned with the Group’s business pillars and the aspirations of Malakoff Environmental Solutions to focus on environmental management and deliver solutions dedicated to serving society and the planet,” he said.

The effort is also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable and reinforces Malakoff’s overarching purpose of ‘Enhancing Life, Enriching Communities’, he added.
