KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- The proposal to limit the prime minister’s tenure to a maximum of 10 years or two full terms is a bold and responsible move toward fostering a new political culture that is transparent, progressive, and democratic for the nation’s advancement.
PKR Women’s Information Chief Datuk Ginie Lim said the proposal reflects Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s political resolve to expedite the implementation of reform promises after decades in the opposition, and also demonstrates his commitment to driving change while in power, rather than after losing it.
“During Anwar’s three years of leadership, the Unity Government has successfully maintained political stability, driven economic growth, and safeguarded the welfare of the people.
“PKR Women are confident that continued institutional reforms will enable Malaysians to benefit from the country’s growing wealth,” she said in a statement today.
As such, Lim said Anwar’s leadership deserves continued support for another term to ensure institutional reform agendas can be fully implemented, helping to rid the country of systemic decay and corruption for the well-being of the people and a brighter future for Malaysia.
“In this regard, PKR Women fully support the Prime Minister’s efforts to continue leading and strengthening the government machinery to be more robust, effective, and with high integrity in implementing fiscal and economic policies under the Madani Economy framework,” she added.
Meanwhile, DAP Policy Director Datuk Chan Foong Hin welcomed Anwar’s commitment to limiting the prime minister’s tenure, describing it as a clear reflection of the reform agenda enshrined in Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto for the 15th General Election (GE15).
Chan noted that the proposed constitutional reform would serve as an important safeguard against excessive concentration of power while strengthening democratic accountability at the highest level of national leadership.
He said that other institutional reform proposals announced by the Prime Minister, including the separation of the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, the introduction of a Freedom of Information Act, and the establishment of an Ombudsman institution, demonstrate a serious effort to rebuild public trust and ensure governance is carried out with integrity, accountability and within a democratic institutional framework.
Chan said that over the past three years, the MADANI Government has undertaken intensive consultations, cross-ministerial engagement and a comprehensive mid-term review to ensure reforms are prioritised, consensus-driven and effectively implemented.
“Reform does not happen overnight. It requires patience, stability and perseverance.
“After three years of rebuilding trust, restoring institutional functions and laying a strong foundation, Malaysia is now in a better position to move forward with confidence and clear direction,” he said in a statement today.
Chan added that DAP remains committed to the reform agenda and called on all lawmakers and stakeholders to set aside partisan differences and work together to ensure reforms are implemented effectively, transparently and in the best interests of the people and the nation’s future.
