KOTA KINABALU, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- The Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) has set a three-month deadline for 86 unlicensed accommodation premises in Semporna to complete their licence applications and fully comply with the legal requirements.
KePKAS assistant minister Dr Andi Md Shamsureezal Mohd Saina said action would be taken against operators who failed to apply and enforcement would be implemented in an integrated manner.
“Based on current findings, 190 accommodation premises are operating in Semporna. Of this number, 45 are licensed, 59 are in the process of applying, while 86 have yet to apply,” he said.
He said this in a statement today after chairing a special working committee meeting to address tourism issues in Semporna, as part of proactive efforts to strengthen safety levels and boost tourist confidence.
“Semporna is a safe tourist destination. The ministry would soon carry out integrated operations with enforcement agencies and local authorities, particularly to ensure compliance with licensing requirements, including tourist safety standard operating procedures (SOPs),” he added.
At the same time, he said the ministry will publish tourist safety SOPs, which will be made publicly accessible on KePKAS’ official website as reference for stakeholders.
