‘DAPUR SISWA MADANI’ INITIATIVE TO HELP UMK STUDENTS CUT LIVING COSTS

BACHOK, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) has launched the ‘Dapur Siswa MADANI’ initiative to help reduce the cost of living burden among its students.

UMK vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Arham Abdullah said about 76 per cent of the university’s students come from the B40 group.

He said the initiative aims to ensure students have access to basic needs, especially food.

The facilities provide cooking equipment and dry food supplies for students to prepare their own meals.

“UMK also plans to provide ready-cooked meals two to four times a month for asnaf students and those from poor families,” he told Bernama recently.

Arham said the initiative will help students manage daily expenses while ensuring their welfare.

In this regard, UMK deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Mohammad Ismail said five Dapur Siswa MADANI facilities will be opened this year.

He said the facilities will be located at residential colleges in Bachok, Kota Bharu and Jeli.

Meanwhile, Arham said UMK spent about RM1.5 million last year on student welfare programmes.

The assistance benefited more than 8,000 students and included laptops, food banks and medical aid, he said.

UMK Student Representative Council President Saiful Azam Shamsul Amir said the council also undertakes welfare initiatives for students.

He welcomed the Dapur Siswa MADANI initiative as it helps reduce students’ financial burden, in line with the government’s allocation to strengthen food programmes at higher education institutions.
