JAKARTA, Jan 9 (Bernama) -- Indonesia will assume the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in 2026, marking the country’s first time holding the post as the council commemorates the 20th anniversary of its establishment.
In its capacity as president, Indonesia will chair all council sessions and processes throughout the year in an objective, inclusive and balanced manner, in accordance with the council’s annual programme of work and human rights issues of common concern.
In a statement, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said the appointment was officially confirmed at a UNHRC meeting on Thursday, held alongside the council’s first organisational meeting of 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The ministry said the position of UNHRC president will be held by Indonesia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro.
“Indonesia is committed to exercising the UNHRC presidency in an impartial, objective and transparent manner.
“Indonesia’s presidency will prioritise confidence-building, strengthening cross-regional dialogue and fostering the constructive engagement of all stakeholders,” it added.
The council was established in 2006, with its presidency rotating among regional groups.
To date, Indonesia has served six terms as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council and has twice been entrusted with the position of vice-president of the council.
