KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Before the 16th season of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) Malaysia Professional League (MPL MY) kicked off in September 2025, CG Esports was largely mentioned only as a filler team in the competition.
Although they were promoted after winning the third season of the MLBB Academy League (MAL), it was not enough to make them a feared contender compared with experienced teams like Vamos, Homebois and Monster Vicious, who had talented players and consistent records.
However, after a few matches, the narrative began to change. The team, previously considered an underdog, started showing its claws, culminating in the playoffs when they defeated Monster Vicious in the lower bracket final, advancing to the MPL MY grand final and qualifying for the M7 World Championship.
To fans and observers, CG’s journey seemed like a dream. But the reality was far from easy, demanding sacrifices, clearing various obstacles and facing difficult moments before finally standing as a top contender on the biggest stage.
“From the outside, it looks like everything went smoothly, but in reality, there were many challenges. For example, player line-ups—misunderstandings between players and coaches, among coaches, among players, and so on.
“There were many issues, but Alhamdulillah, we managed to fix them one by one,” said Muhammad Danial Mohamad Fuad, also known as CikuGais, player and owner of CG.
That was just one chapter of many obstacles. Step by step, CG’s journey proves that their presence on the world stage is not just talk.
Founded in 2024, the team started with only the experience of its owner, who is also a professional player.
But careful planning and high discipline guided the team’s development to the level that now attracts attention and admiration.
“All the team members are highly committed, to the point that they often have little time for their families. For example, CikuGais himself can only spend time with his child on weekends.
“This is the kind of sacrifice people don’t see. What they do is for the MLBB community in Malaysia and to bring glory to the country on the world stage,” said CG analyst Mariah Ahmad.
Meanwhile, CG Esports team manager Aidil Ziyad likened CG’s dream run to Leicester City winning the English Premier League (EPL) in 2015-2016.
According to Aidil, although the storylines differ slightly, both teams started from the bottom without high expectations, yet managed to defy all odds.
“We will try our best to bring glory to Malaysia on the world stage,” he said.
CG’s appearance at the World Championship carries special significance for the esports landscape, as an organisation built from its own players now stands alongside other global representatives.
It also reinforces the narrative that hard work can ultimately translate into tangible achievement.
