KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Universities play an important role as strategic partners in supporting research related to artificial intelligence (AI) technology, governance and corruption prevention, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said.

He said the MACC is placing emphasis on AI technology as it can help develop human capital in areas such as digital forensics, data analytics and technology ethics.

“Given current needs, the MACC must draw on expertise from universities, both locally and abroad, to enhance the effectiveness of anti-corruption efforts.

“These efforts will not succeed without continuous investment in education, research and technology, as well as in improving the skills and professionalism of officers,” he said in a statement today.

Earlier today, according to the statement, Azam witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Monash University Malaysia and MACC’s Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy (MACA) here.

Azam said through the MoU, the MACC will leverage the combined strengths of MACA’s practical experience and the university’s academic expertise to produce innovative, realistic and high-impact solutions.

As an example, he said Monash University Malaysia could assist the MACC in enhancing existing systems to address complex cases, thereby enabling investigations to be completed more efficiently and within stipulated timeframes.

“Additionally, the MACC hopes to secure grants for the development of AI technology through the collaboration forged between MACA and Monash University Malaysia,” he said.

In the same statement, Monash University Malaysia president and pro vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Adeeba Kamarulzaman said the collaboration would provide direct access to frontline practitioners and establish a strong platform to translate academic expertise into practical outcomes relevant at the national level.

She said the collaboration would also create opportunities for applied research projects, policy development, training and institutional strengthening, particularly involving the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Law at Monash University Malaysia.

Also present at the MoU signing were MACA senior director Datuk Mohd Hafaz Nazar, MACC National Governance Planning Division senior director Datuk Idris Zaharudin, MACC Governance Investigation Division director Datuk Mohd Zaki Hassan and MACC Policy, Planning and Research Division director Datuk Rasidah Abdul Karim.
