GEORGE TOWN, Jan 13 (Bernama) - A police officer has been remanded on suspicion of soliciting and accepting a bribe of about RM27,000 in return for not taking action against two company owners who committed legal offences such as entertainment centres, massage parlours and illegal gambling.

A four-day remand order until Jan 16 against the suspect was issued by Magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi after an application was made by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Magistrate's Court here today.

According to sources, the male suspect, aged in his 50s, was arrested at about 10.40 pm yesterday when he appeared to give a statement at the Penang MACC office.

"Initial investigations believe the suspect committed the act between 2016 and 2021 by accepting bribes of between RM500 and RM2,000 per month.

"The suspect is suspected of having received bribes through online money transfer transactions to third-party accounts from the owner of a licensed money lending company and the owner of a health services company," he said.

Meanwhile, Penang MACC director Datuk S.Karunanithy when contacted confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
