MELAKA NRD EXTENDS FREE ADDRESS CHANGE FOR DIGITAL VILLAGE UNTIL YEAR-END

20/01/2026 10:27 PM

MELAKA, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- The free address change period for identity cards under the Digital Village (Kampung Digital) initiative, which was originally set to end on Dec 31 last year, has been extended until the end of this year.

Melaka National Registration Department (NRD) director Mohd Dzulkarnain Baharuddin said that as of the previous deadline, only 4,035 residents had completed the process of replacing their identity cards at local branches or district registration offices.

"Previously, the free period was available from Aug 1 to Dec 31 last year, but due to the low number of applications, the deadline has been extended until year-end.

"We expect some 100,000 residents from hundreds of villages in Melaka to participate, and they need to complete the digital address change process to facilitate various matters, including dealings with government departments," he told reporters after the Melaka NRD Monthly Assembly and Director's New Year Address here today.

He added that to facilitate the process, residents must provide a copy of the Digital Village address change letter issued by their respective District and Land Offices (PDT).

Mohd Dzulkarnain said that to assist senior citizens and those in rural areas, Melaka NRD has also deployed the "Menyemai Kasih Rakyat" (Mekar) mobile service van in collaboration with the PDT.

Digital Village is a pilot project by the Melaka government designed to streamline address location processes and improve services for residents at the grassroots level.

Under the initiative, 657 villages will undergo a digital transformation, with homes assigned new addresses and Quick Response (QR) codes for easier location tracking.

In a related development, Mohd Dzulkarnain said Melaka NRD has received a RM10,000 allocation from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Melaka to implement the Mekar Ihsan Programme this year.

He said the programme targets groups such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, the bedridden, and those without financial means to assist them in obtaining NRD services.

"Additionally, through this allocation, we will distribute food aid kits to the target groups in need under the programme," he added.
