PUTRAJAYA, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- The introduction of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) elements in national schools through the National Education Blueprint (RPN) 2026-2035 is a timely move in cultivating a new societal mindset that recognises skills as an asset for human capital development.

National Organisation of Skilled Workers (BELIA MAHIR) president Mohammad Rizan Hassan said at the primary and lower secondary school levels, the TVET approach should focus on early exposure that nurtures interest, understanding and appreciation of skills instead of technical training.

“This exposure helps students understand that learning encompasses creativity, problem-solving, the use of technology and exploration of personal potential.

“The formation of this mindset is crucial as it influences how society, including parents and educators, perceives skills as a value and an asset in human capital development.

“When this culture is nurtured from an early stage, students will grow with the confidence to identify their talents and potential, and subsequently make more informed and purposeful education and career choices,” he told Bernama.

Last Tuesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the RPN 2026-2035, a major education reform to build a more equitable, competitive and values-based future for the younger generation.

Among the key components of the RPN, jointly led by the Ministry of Higher Education through the Malaysia Higher Education Blueprint 2026-2035 and the Ministry of Education through the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2026-2035, is the introduction of TVET at primary and secondary schools via the 2027 school curriculum.

Mohammad Rizan, who is also a member of the National TVET Council, said BELIA MAHIR welcomes the Prime Minister’s announcement on strengthening TVET, as it is a strategic and forward-looking step in shaping the country’s education direction and long-term talent development.

“This announcement reflects a significant shift in the national human capital development approach, particularly by positioning skills as a core element within the education system, in line with future economic, technological and industrial needs,” he said.

At the same time, Mohammad Rizan said efforts to strengthen TVET should not be focused solely on students; emphasis must also be placed on enhancing the capacity and skills of educators.

“Educators are the backbone of TVET effectiveness and must be continuously empowered through ongoing training, industry exposure, mastery of technology and the latest training methods. In addition, training facilities and equipment must keep pace with industry developments.

“A relevant and modern learning environment not only enhances training quality, but also ensures that the skills developed are truly aligned with workplace realities,” he said.

He also noted that industry involvement must be a key element in strengthening TVET.

“Industry is not merely a recipient of graduates, but a strategic partner in shaping curricula, setting skills standards and identifying future workforce needs.

“Consistent industry involvement will instil confidence that the national TVET system is capable of producing a highly skilled workforce that is relevant, adaptive and ready to meet industry needs not only today, but also over the next 10 years,” he added.
